External Evaluation

The RAND report, Measuring Stone Soup’s Adherence to After-School Care Practices, details the methods, procedures and outcomes of our 14-month collaborative effort with RAND to evaluate the effectiveness of Stone Soup’s program and assisted RAND in its efforts in identifying quality standards for after-school child care programs.

By participating in this external evaluation of our programs, Stone Soup took a big step forward in addressing the “elusive quality dimension.” The Board and staff were pleased with how well we measured up to an externally defined list of “best practices.” In those areas where the best practice was congruent with Stone Soup’s mission and values, we did very well.

Stone Soup had good overall ratings on:

  • Staff Training
  • Flexibility of Programming
  • Emotional Climate
  • Space and Furnishings
  • Materials
  • Safety and Health
  • Involvement of Families
  • Staff Compensation
  • Variety of Activities
  • Child to Staff Ratio
  • Enrollment
  • Mixing of Age Groups
  • Clear Goals and Evaluation
  • Partnerships
